This letter investigates energy-efficient cooperative routing in underwater acoustic sensor networks. However, this letter lacks the novelty as the following reasons.

1. The authors describes that this letter investigates the feasibility of combining
routing and cooperative communication. However, this letter considers a simple
two-hop network. Consequently, this letter investigates selection of a relay node
considering cooperative communication rather than combining routing and
cooperative communication.

2. There are a lot of work about cooperative communications in wireless sensor
networks. For example, the following paper investigates the energy-efficient
cooperative communication, like this letter. In the system model, the reviewer
cannot find the difference between wireless sensor networks and UW-ASNs.
Therefore, the past work in wireless sensor networks can be applied to the
system model in this letter, and the novelty of this letter is unclear.

Other comments:

3. Cooperative routing described in 2.2.2 selects a next-hop node and a relay
node. In this system, not only i but also j is a parameter of f2 in (5) and f3 in
(11). At the line 1 in algorithms 2 and 3, "for i in NB(s,d)" should be "for i,j in
NB(s,d)". At the line 4, "relay <- NB(s,d)\{i}" should be "relay <- j".

4. At l.15, p. 3, "b is the bandwidth" should be "B is the bandwidth".

5. In the simulation results, the authors depict figures of minimum transmission
energy for each sample. From these figures, it is slightly difficult to find the
performance difference among routing algorithms. The authors had better show
statistical values of simulation results, for example, the cumulative density
function of the minimum transmission energy of the routing algorithms.
