Deterministic Backoff-based Energy-Saving MAC Protocol for UAV-WSN

Abstract—The data gathering process deploying Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) in Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) is different from the common WSN system. The mobility of UAVs requires nodes to communicate and transmit their data within a short time. Therefore, the fairness among contending nodes is degraded, which affects the network performance in terms of throughput and packet delivery ratio (PDR). In this work, a novel MAC protocol for data gathering in UAV-WSNs is proposed. The proposed MAC protocol uses a four-state method to maintain the energy consumption of nodes. Moreover, the proposed MAC protocol uses a deterministic backoff mechanism instead of binary exponential backoff (BEB) to avoid collisions among contending nodes. Simulation results verify that this proposed MAC protocol enhances the network performance of the system in terms of throughput, PDR, and fairness.
