Priority-based Medium Access Protocol for UAV–WSN

This paper proposes a new medium access control (MAC) protocol for wireless sensor network (WSN) data gathering, employing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV). The proposed MAC protocol is based on the legacy IEEE 802.11 carrier-sense multiple access collision avoidance protocol. In this protocol, nodes are only active when the UAV is in their vicinity. Moreover, nodes are prioritized based on their location within the UAVs communication range. Nodes located farthest from the center of the active UAV area get the highest priority, and vice versa. Hence, all nodes have equal chances of accessing the UAV channel. Additionally, the proposed MAC protocol uses different values of distributed coordination function interframe spacing (DIFS) for each priority level. Consequently, nodes located on the highest priority side-level frame have a shorter DIFS value than those of the lower priority side-level frames.
