This paper analyzes the energy efficiency and throughput performance of Single-hop, Multi-hop, Decode-and-Forward (DF) and Incremental Decode-and-Forward (IDF) transmission schemes. This paper studies the impact of propagation channel in both Line-of-Sight (LOS) and Non Line-of-Sight (NLOS) environments based on the Nakagami-m fading channel. Our simulation results show that IDF protocol, exploiting cooperative transmission scheme and a feedback bit at the destination, achieves better performance than the other schemes.

Question from the Moderator:

Does the IDF (Incremental DF) protocol cause the delay problem of the system because of ACK/NACK packet?


Our simulation results show that the cooperative protocol, especially utilizing the feedback channel from the destination brings significant benefits in terms of energy consumption and throughput performance. However, the end-to-end throughput constraint considered in this paper still not compensate for the feedback packet. Therefore, it may cause the the latency of the system. Thus, that is one of the weak points of this paper. 

In addition, the cooperative Incremental DF protocol requires more complex hardware system than other protocols, which may cause the problem for implementation. Therefore, we should balance between the benefits and the drawbacks in suitable scenarios.

The authors should extend this paper by taking more existing protocols into account for next KICS conference and journal version.
