Effective Load Balancing for Multi-Controller in Software-Defined Network

This thesis proposes an effective load balancing scheme for distributed controller in Software-Defined Networks (SDNs). Based on load status and dynamic weight coefficient on each controller, the proposed scheme guarantees load balance among SDN controllers in control plane to achieve better resource usage, reliability, and resilience in the network. By using pre-defined load threshold, communication overhead induced between controllers and load balancer is significantly reduced in comparison with existing approaches. Furthermore, aiming to ensure QoS for real-time traffic, a functional module called Priority Queuing is developed in load balancer. The simulation results conducted in Mininet emulator manifest that the proposed scheme is effective in terms of communication overhead, performance of load balancing in the control plane, and guaranteeing QoS for real-time traffic in the network.
