This thesis describes load balancing algorithm for Wireless LAN (WLANs). The traffic load of WLANs is often distributed unevenly among access points. The load balancing mechanism provides a natural mechanism for dealing with load fluctuations and alleviating the performance impact. The proposed scheme checks each AP¡¯s load state and balances overloaded APs by immigrating some wireless stations towards under loaded one, periodically. Each wireless station has different throughput with different APs, respectively. Immigration can be accomplished with considering throughput value between the wireless station and under loaded APs. The system overload is uniformly distributed among under loaded cells that wireless stations from overloaded cell moves to most under loaded cell first. The load balancing algorithm mostly considers throughput improvement in imbalance state of the system. Simulation results show that proposed load balancing improves performance significantly in terms of throughput and data loss due to overloading.
