Enhanced Industrial Message Protocol for Real-time IoT Platforms

This paper designs and implements an industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) platform based on the Manufacturing Message Specification (MMS) with enhanced security through unidirectional communications. For the proposed MMS-based IIoT platform, MMS over MQTT (MoM) protocol, which publishes and subscribes MMS messages using Message Queue Telemetry Transport (MQTT), is proposed along with a unidirectional data forwarding rule. In order to evaluate the performance of the proposed MMS-based IIoT platform, transmission time and packet loss rate are compared with User Datagram Protocol (UDP)-based communications. Through experiment and simulation results, we show that the proposed platform has a longer transmission time than UDP, but the reliability of the data transmission is higher
