Design and Implementation of Hybrid Network for Smart Farm: LoRa and IEEE 802.11 Wireless Backhaul Network

This paper presents a hybrid network for a smart farm by using LoRa technology and IEEE 802.11 backhaul network. The proposed hybrid network is implemented in the application layer. The system is able to adjust the protocol based on the network condition. For instance, the LoRaWAN protocol can be used to send sensor readings that only have small amounts of data. As IEEE 802.11ac has a higher data rate than LoRaWAN, it can be used to send video data. A hybrid mode, which combines the advantages of both protocols, leads the system to achieve reliability and to save energy while performing the monitoring task. Moreover, the system can detect the faulty-node condition. The system has been evaluated for real deployment scenarios. The result demonstrates that the proposed system has better reliability and consumes less energy than systems in existing works.
