This paper proposes an algorithm to select efficient relays for cooperative transmissions in order to improve the performance of underwater acoustic sensor networks (UW-ASNs) in terms of end-to-end delay, packet delivery ratio. Based on physical distance and channel property, the proposed method selects the best relay among a set of neighbor nodes to enhance communication reliability. In addition, by exploiting two consecutive acknowledgment (ACK) packets (namely ACK-I and ACK-II), our scheme not only prohibits redundant transmissions but also avoids wasting wireless resources. Our simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves shorter end-to-end delay, lower energy cost and higher packet delivery ratio than conventional non-cooperative schemes.
